Adversities and marital adjustment strategies of Korean men of international marriages

Abstract

|
This study aimed to understand Korean men` s strategies for marital adjustment in their international marriages. We explored the adversities and adjustment strategies in their marital lives. The participants of this study were 11 Korean men who perceived that they had successfully maintained their international marriages. The adversities were (a) differences of culture/food (b) communication problems (c) child education problems (d) marital relationship problems (e) financial problems, (f) problems with in-laws. Their strategies for overcoming the adversities in their marriages were (a) efforts to understand the cultural differences (b) negotiating on food (c) helping wife to learn Korean language (d) doing one` s best for bringing up and educating one` s children (e) mediator role to the members of family of origin in behalf of one` s wife/being nice to the members of wife` s family of origin (f) helping house chores (g) efforts for keeping positive relationships with wife, The significance of this study is that we focused on the strength of Korean men of international marriages differently from the previous studies. We employed in- depth interviews and constant comparison method, which are qualitative research approaches.
